Our biggest news this posting is that Emma began crawling Saturday, June 3rd. She also turned 8 months old AND got her first serious cold that day. So, it was a busy weekend for us!! It is amazing how fast she can crawl within just a few days of starting to crawl! Emma REALLY wants to pull herself up on our big screen TV. and touch the buttons. I can always tell where she is headed, for she starts to giggle when she takes off for the TV. She pulls herself up now on everything (to include her parents and anyone else around her that will let her) and explores the object and anything on it. She is forcing us to be better housekeepers than we have EVER been before!
Emma has decided the doorstops are great fun and loves playing with them. She really likes the noise they make. She also likes to see the world around her upside down when possible. When Jared or I are holding her, she’ll lean all the way back or if she is in her Exersaucer or walker, she’ll also lean all the way back. She has also discovered decorations on blankets. She doesn’t realize that she can’t pick up the pictures and decorations on the blankets, that they are attached. She really tries to grab anything that is embroidered. Emma’s Great Aunt Laura that lives in Oklahoma made her a light quilt with embroidered bumblebees on the squares. She will sit on that blanket and try several times to pick up the bees before she’ll move onto something else. Emma has also rediscovered her tongue in the last few days and has begun to stick it out a lot again.
She is getting one tooth after another these days. The baby book we use tells us that their teeth come in in two’s, which they have been so far. Her little smile is changing so much with the addition of her teeth! We’ve not been able to get a really good picture of her upper teeth yet, but we keep trying and will post one as soon as we can.
I returned to work on June 1st. Emma began daycare on May 31st, ½ days only through June 6th. She then started full days on Thursday the 8th. Sherry Cook is her daycare provider, and they are getting to know one another quickly. The first few days were really tough to where Emma would not take a bottle from Sherry. But, now she takes a bottle from her and Emma will lift up her arms to Sherry to be picked up. Emma was napping regularly from day one, which was a good sign to me that she felt safe enough in Sherry’s care to sleep.
Emma continues to “talk.” She chatters ALL the time. Yes, I know, she is her mother’s child (smiles). She now says mama and dada with distinction, most often when she is upset or wants out of her highchair or Exersaucer to crawl about, or to be held. When she is upset, she’ll cry and “talk” at the same time. She is very vocal about what she does and does not like and I am certain there are times that she is telling us off, especially when it comes to changing her diaper. The more she is mobile, the more she hates being laid down for any reason. It has become a serious challenge to change her diaper or dress her, for she’ll try to roll over the second she is laid down on her changing table. Most of the time I have to move her to the floor for safety reasons. Sometimes I have to pin her arms down w/my legs just to change her diaper! I am becoming more skilled at dressing her while she stands in her crib. The snaps on her onsies or shorts can be tricky with one hand, but we get there eventually.
She stopped liking baby food and quit eating it all together just before I went back to work. This past Saturday the 17th, we were having dinner with friends and their little girls who is 5 months older than Emma (and their 2nd child) was eating fruit. Mike & Meg suggested we try solids with Emma, so I gave her a blueberry, which she liked very much. She ate 5 of them, skin and all. I gave her more the next day on Father’s Day and then on Monday some banana. I’ve also tried green beans, which she did not care for. She did eat some avocado last night, though. So, we are on our way, FINALLY. I really didn’t know what to do with her not eating baby food and thought she needed to get into that before moving onto solids. Not so. Thanks to the parenting experience and advise of Mike and Meg, that problems has been solved. She won’t self-feed yet, but that will come.
We’re not sure how much Emma weighs exactly, but I do know she is more than 20 pounds. We haven’t measured her in a while either. She has her 9-month doctor’s appointment on the 5th of July, so we’ll know then how much she has grown. I can tell you she is wearing 9-12 month clothes and has been for about a month. She is a tall baby and grows out of things lengthwise quickly. She not as wide as she is tall (thankfully…my arms ache enough as it is), so most things that are 6-9 month size fit her body, just not in length.
