Milestones
August 9th – No longer cries when I leave her at daycare and will go to Sherry willingly.
August 11th – Can stand up from a seated position without assistance or grabbing onto anything.
August 14th – Taking more steps in between pieces of furniture or will walk towards the middle of the room. 4-5 steps max before sitting down to crawl.
August 16th – First ear infection with high fever – bummer!
August 23rd – First big tumble at daycare and got a black eye. We called her Rocky for several days afterwards.
August 26th – Emma is walking!!!
September 3rd – Waving and saying “bye, bye.”
September 8th – saying “hi”
September 12th – Still REALLY hates carrots and does not like peas.
October 1st – says “hi” on the phone to Grandpa Sam
As of her doctor's appointment on 08/16, Emma weighed 20.4 pounds and she is wearing 12-month size clothes and size 3 shoes. We put her on our scale today, and it says 21 pounds. She has her one-year appointment this week, so we’ll get an official height and weight then.
So the big new for this posting, obviously, is Emma began walking Saturday the 26th of August. She had been taking more steps the few weeks prior to and walking into the middle of rooms before she’ll loose her balance and sit down. She is doing so great with walking!! She is really getting direction change down, too. She’ll be headed in one direction, change her mind and either walk around in a circle to go the other direction, or stop walking and turn herself in the new direction she wants to go. The other day, she was almost running she was walking so fast! I think that was more about she got ahead of herself and was just trying to keep from falling (smiles).
Her favorite toys right now are an orange ball, bumblebee maracas, her “Touch and Feel Farm” book and a receiving blanket. She really likes to pick up her orange ball and any receiving blanket and carry them around. I think she is emulating one of her toys when she does that – it is a rubber Linus doll and of course he is holding his blanket. Emma also has started dragging things behind her, like a blanket or toy. She has started to say “no” while looking at something she is not allowed to touch, like an electrical outlet. She generally won’t go ahead and touch it, just stand there, say “no” and then move on. Unfortunately, she is now tall enough to turn the knobs on our gas stove and strong enough to open the oven door. Both have now been baby proofed. All the lower kitchen cabinets now have childproof latches and we have put a trashcan under the kitchen sink.
Emma continues to love to play chase. We’ll chase her around our dining room table by either crawling or walking. She will crawl or walk, depending on how quick she wants to move. If she wants to go really fast, she will crawl rather than walk. She squeals and giggles the whole time, and as any parent knows, you’ll do just about ANYTHING to make your kid squeal and giggle with joy!!
She no longer cries when I leave her at daycare and willingly goes to Sherry. She continues to have a great time there with Sherry and the other kids. When she went to daycare the Monday after she started to walk, I forgot to tell Sherry she was walking. Sherry and the oldest boy Zack (he’s two) were surprised when she did and clapped for her each time she walked. Now sometimes, she’ll clap for herself after she’s been walking and has sat down. Too cute!
Emma is now eating three full meals of solid food a day and I am still nursing her in the mornings and evenings. She is such a good eater and still likes a wide variety of food. She doesn’t like egg yolks anymore, though and she does NOT like carrots. I tried carrots twice, and twice she spit them out, so no more carrots for a while.
She got her first ear infection my first week at my new job – of course. Poor thing. Her fever spiked at 102.5. She was in pretty good spirits most of the time, just very cuddly. She continued to eat well and drink lots of water even when her fever was at its highest. We took her to the doctor and she was on antibiotics for a week. It only took her a couple of days to get back to her happy self. I ended up taking a day off work on the 17th and Jared took Friday the 18th off to stay home with her.
Emma is saying more words. She can say ball, dog, ba (for bottle) and her MOST favorite is no-no. She’s can almost say bat, “no touch” and outside. Those words aren’t as clear as the others, but we know what she is saying. She is also waiving and saying “bye, bye” or “hi.” At daycare she is the official greeter and will waive and say “bye, bye” to the other parents and kids when they leave, or when we are leaving.
She continues to LOVE the dogs. Last night she was in the kitchen talking to them through the glass slider as she does every day so I opened the slider to let her pet the dogs and she was just beside herself with joy. She was giggling the whole time and got mad at me when I made the dogs go back outside and shut the door. I think Lexi is her favorite. She squeals more when she sees her. The dogs are VERY good with her and love it when we bring her outside to see them.
My new job is going great and I love it. I got assigned my accounts (almost 300) on August 28th, so I’m off and running. I like the people I work with and my boss very much. They are a wonderful group; fun, very supportive and helpful. I’ll be with this company for quiet some time.
Jared is on crutches for he tore the meniscus in his right knee playing a pick-up game of soccer at the park near our house. He’s been hobbling around since August 29th. We don’t know yet if he’ll need surgery and he will be on crutches for a while. He had an MRI done yesterday (09/30/06) and we’ll know more next week. What we do know is that knee will always be week and will never be the same, so there is the risk of re-injury if he is not careful.
