April 2006

Emma is now 6 ½ months old, 18.4 pounds and 27 inches long, which puts her in the 90% percentile of children her age. Yep, she’s a good size baby, and we couldn’t be happier about that!!

She is developing in leaps and bounds. Wait, I think I said that last month, too. Well, she is! She is sitting up on her own and will play on the floor for long periods of time. We bought her a walking chair at the beginning of March just to have another apparatus to put her in to keep her entertained. Yesterday, she figured out how to make it “work.” I was taking a shower and she began to scoot with purpose for the first time. She scooted herself over to the closet door to touch it and moved herself around the bathroom. When I was putting lotion on, she scooted over to me and put her hands on my legs. It was awesome to see her making the connection. I’m now just afraid she’s going to skip crawling and go straight to walking – yikes!!

She is not crawling yet, but she is rolling like you wouldn’t believe. She can cover some serious distance in a matter of seconds by rolling. She began rolling about three weeks ago. Her rolling capability does make changing her diaper or dressing her a challenge at times. Now that she is sitting up does make dressing her easier, though. Before, she couldn’t STAND having anything put over her head, but now that she can sit up, putting a shirt over her head doesn’t bother her.

She stopped sucking on her fingers and thumb and has begun to like her pacifier more. She is not dependent on it, but will take it more often than before and she hangs onto it longer.

Her favorite part of any toy is the tag. She actively searches for the tag when given any new toy and then promptly starts to chew on it. Emma is teething still, but no teeth. We have started putting homeopathic teething gel on her gums to give her some relief. We bought lots of new teething toys for her and have found that she does not like them chilled. I believe that once she starts eating solid foods and experiences different temperatures she’ll like them chilled. I have tried only a few times to introduce solid foods. She seems to like the taste of applesauce and bananas, but not the texture. Our pediatrician said that I have to give them to her everyday for a while before she’ll begin to like solid food. I gave her banana today and she ate more this time than she did before. We are going to try carrots and sweet potatoes this week.

Emma has started baby talking. Meaning she is now using her tongue and makes “ba, da, dee, la and ma” sounds rather than just making noise. She also loves to make the coughing noise and has also learned how to blow air out her nose. She makes a funny little snorting sound when she does it. When she is tired or frustrated, she’ll squench up her face and blow out her nose. We call it her toughy face. She also giggles at all sorts of things, sometimes even herself.

Emma and Jared have a great relationship now that she is older. He can take her for hours now instead of minutes. He gives her a bath most evenings and they have a great time playing together. She really likes it when he plays peek-a-boo, but her most favorite game with her dad is when he jumps out from behind the couch to scare her. She REALLY likes that and just giggles up a storm.
