Get a cold beverage or cup of coffee, sit back and get comfy…this is a LONG one.
Milestones
June 24th – Emma attends her first tea party and tries a few watermelon balls.
June 25th – Emma visits Grandpa & Grandma Meacham in Salinas, CA and tries a piece of cantaloupe.
June 25th – Back at home, Emma is walking very well along the couch from one end of the couch to the other while holding on very well (yikes!).
July 2nd – has discovered how to “stand on her head.” For those of you who know yoga positions, she looks like she is in the downward facing dog pose.
July 3rd – Emma turns 9 months old.
July 8th – Emma attends her fist pool party. She loved being in the water.
July 10th – first eyetooth has broken through – left side.
July 11th – Escape artist!! No amount of furniture or toys can keep her contained to the living room. She has learned how to squeeze through VERY small spaces to get out.
July 11th – playing chase game for the 1st time. She loves it!
July 22nd – 2nd eyetooth has broken through.
July 27-30th – 1st camping trip to Alpine, CA – Big Meadows Camp Ground in Stanislaus National Forest.
August 3rd – Emma turns 10 months old!
Emma’s stats as of 07-05-06, not sure as of today: weight 19.6 lbs.; height 28 inches. Clothing size 12 months; shoe size between 2 & 3 (depending on the shoe). She’s not wearing shoes now; it’s just too hot, so I buy her size 3.
Emma's growth rate has slowed down. As of her appointment on the 5th of July, she was in the 50-75th percentile. We thought for sure she would weigh more on the 5th, being closer to 20 pounds than she was. Well, I'm sure she is at 20 pounds by now. She certainly feels like it! She still wears 12 months size clothes.
Emma is such an independent child, it surprises us at times. She will play alone either in the living room or in her room for long periods of time. She’ll crawl over to where we are periodically to “check in.” She either crawls over to play for a little bit, or crawl on you (me) to get picked up. I guess we didn’t expect her to be this way until she was older. I don’t know why we thought that, but we did. Emma is still very vocal and chatters all the time. When we hold an object and tell her what it is, she tries her hardest to say it. She says “mama” and “dada” VERY clearly now.
We have cleared out all the houseplants, for she has attempted to eat two of them, and put in outlet plugs. Our house is now baby proofed and she can go into most rooms. Emma has stockpiles of toys in her room, the living room and our room and can play freely in all three. She LOVES looking out her bedroom window as well as out the slider in the kitchen . She really likes the outdoors. Unfortunately, she still really likes to touch the TV., speakers and outlets as well. “No touch” of those items is a constant battle.
Emma now has 6 teeth and all of them are fully in. She is eating quite a bit of solid foods these days. She likes so many things, in fact she has liked everything we’ve given her so far. She eats green beans, chicken, turkey, avocado, blue berries, any kind of melon, carrots, pears, peaches, cheese, sweet potatoes and scrambled egg yolk. When I have something to eat, she wants it also. There are times when she cannot have what I am eating, but so far she has not gotten upset about it. So far… She is also drinking from sippy cups and bottles with straws, and likes water a lot.
We’ve started brushing her teeth and she doesn’t mind it at all. We are using the toothbrush that fits over your finger. She does bite down when I’m brushing her teeth, but thankfully not hard enough to hurt. We’ll be switching to a real toothbrush soon.
We had Emma dedicated on July 16th during Sunday worship at our church. She was in rare form during the dedication – smiling and clapping for all the church members. It is a small church and we’ve been attending since just after she was born, so she is pretty well known to the other members. Jared’s parents, grandparents and two of his uncles and their wives were able to come to Sacramento and attend the ceremony. We then went to our house for lunch and Emma continued to keep the family entertained.
Emma had other very fun firsts these past months. Her first tea party and swim party; see pics below. Her cousins Abby and Sydney from Seattle hosted a tea party when they were in town visiting. They sang to Emma, and she loved the attention. At the pool party, she loved the water and really enjoyed playing in the pool.
Her other first was a camping trip. She enjoyed herself so much – playing with the other kids, spending time with her grandparents, eating dirt, trying to chew on sticks, bark and rocks. All the things a first time kid camper should do, she did! Including getting dirt on her from head to toe. She did not like the feel of the dirt on her hands; however, and didn’t wander off of the playmates that were set up at our camp and the main cook camp unless she had something to hold onto and she could walk off the mats. We enjoyed ourselves as well - the camping trip in an annual event with several other families. There were 34 of us this year, which included 4 new additions (to include Emma)!
She is not walking without assistance yet, thankfully. She is letting go of one piece of furniture, taking a step or two towards another before grabbing back on. She is getting close and I imagine she'll be walking by or around her 1st birthday. People say she'll really get into things then. Well, she REALLY gets into things now! When she starts walking, she'll get into the same things, just falling down more while doing it (smiles).
She is doing great at daycare. There are days where she does not cry when I leave her – I look forward to those days and I know it makes Sherry feel good (smiles). Emma likes the other kids there and plays well with them. There are three older than her and one baby. She has also learned to “defend” herself and will push Sophia (she’s 14 months) away from her if she gets too close to Emma (like trying to sit on her) or if Sophia tries to take a toy Emma has that she hasn’t finished playing with. I’m sure they will fight over toys later as they both get older. I’m pretty sure that Emma can take Sophia though (smiles)….kidding…well, not really. Hahaha!!
Take care!
